Hands on Adjustments & Assists

with Drew Hume

Touch in yoga is a big can of worms – and we’re going to open it. There’s a lot of people who are entirely AGAINST the idea, there’s a lot of people who are entirely FOR the idea, and there’s a huge number of people somewhere in the middle who aren’t certain how to go about it or if they should. I’m guessing that’s you in the middle.

We’re approaching this work through the perspective of manual therapy (massage) – because part of what’s missing from the usual conversation – the critical information about touch and the vocabulary of touch. A lot of teachers just go for the application of touch – without covering bases first. We’ll set the foundation with some touch biology, and the “right” approach to making physical contact with someone.

Once we have that foundation set up, we are then going to get into the application of touch through two different lenses – one of assisting and the other of adjusting. That starts with getting familiar with the responses of the muscles/body to touch – calibrating your touch sensitivity before moving forward.

You’ll walk away from this 4 hours having practiced common/relevant assists and adjustments but more importantly you’ll walk away with a recipe that you can apply to any and all touch-situations in a yoga class.

Come along and expand your touch vocabulary

About Drew Hume

“Part of my work is aimed at educating people on human biology and the physical forms of Thai Massage and another, larger dream of mine is to ensure that as a culture, we become more touch-literate.

I hope to dissolve the culturally ingrained habits that have been spread out of the fear of touch. Touch-aversion goes against our deepest biological needs and so it continues to take us further and further out of connection. I’m here to share education and teach skills in compassionate touch so that we can return to a far healthier state, and a far more interconnected community.

In case you’re wondering about my own education, I have a BASc. in Human Biology, and numerous certifications in manual therapy through a Thai massage lens.”
